Our story

Destined for Greatness (D4G) was born out of a deep desire to uplift and empower youth through education, athletics, the arts, and entrepreneurship. The journey began in Rochester, NY, where founder Damon Garfield Sr. first planted the seeds of this vision in 1998 while working in the Mayor’s Office as a youth intervention counselor for Pathways of Peace.

At a time when public funding largely supported intervention rather than prevention, Damon recognized a deeper need—a need for a holistic approach that not only addressed immediate challenges but nurtured the full potential of young people, especially those navigating life after incarceration or caught in cycles of violence.

Fueled by passion and purpose, he launched an AAU basketball program that went beyond the game. What started with just seven teams quickly grew into a movement grounded in mentorship, structure, and the teaching of core values—discipline, character, and resilience. Inspired by his son, Damon Garfield Jr., this work became more than a program; it became a calling.

And from that calling, Destined for Greatness was born—a community rooted in love, driven by purpose, and committed to preparing youth not just for the next step, but for a life of meaning and impact.
